Sexual Misconduct and Discrimination and Harassment Investigations

Reports under Policy #131 – Sexual Assault and Other Sexual Misconduct and complaints under Policy #3 – Discrimination and Harassment are submitted to the Director of Investigations, who will then follow the procedures set out under the applicable Policy.

Reports made under Policy #131 – Sexual Assault and Other Sexual Misconduct

Reports of sexual assault or misconduct against a member of the UBC community must be submitted to the Director of Investigations, who will do an initial review to determine whether the allegations fall within UBC’s jurisdiction to investigate, and if so, will appoint an investigator to investigate or refer the matter to an alternative resolution process. While UBC searches for a permanent Director of Investigations, this role will be carried out by the Interim Director of Investigations, Stephanie Vellins, a lawyer who has familiarity with investigations at UBC.

Anyone directly subjected to sexual assault or misconduct, including an individual who is not a member of the UBC community, can make a report against a member of the UBC Community under Policy 131.

If you wish to submit a report under Policy 131, or have questions for the Interim Director of Investigations, you can contact her:

• by email at director.of.investigations@ubc.ca or
• by phone at 778-328-2541

Complaints made under Policy #3 – Discrimination and Harassment

Complaints of discrimination or harassment under Policy 3 made against members of the university community and/or the University must be submitted to the Director of Investigations (currently identified as the Director, Equity Complaint Management in the Policy). When a complaint is received by the Director, the Director will first determine whether or not the Policy applies. If it is determined that the Policy does apply, then the Director will review the complaint and may then refer it to another unit for internal investigation and resolution, address it under the Compliant Management process set out in Section 3.10 of the procedures under Policy 3, or dismiss or decline to proceed with the complaint.

While UBC searches for a permanent Director of Investigations, this role will be carried out by the Interim Director of Investigations, Stephanie Vellins, a lawyer who has familiarity with investigations at UBC.

If you wish to submit a complaint under Policy 3, or have questions for the Interim Director of Investigations, you can contact her:

• by email at director.of.investigations@ubc.ca or
• by phone at 778-328-2541
